Media processor provides options for STBs and media gateways

25 May 2012

In the recently held Broadband & IPTV Asia 2012 exhibition held last May 15 and 16 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Intel has promoted its latest integrated chipset, the CE5300 media processor, internally known as "Berryville." The Berryville continues the legacy of Intel architecture-based SoC media processors, and features a dual adaptor code, and 32nm processor with built-in enhanced 2D/3D graphics. Via the CE5300, users are assured of more bandwidth and better graphics. Flash and HTML 5 are said to work well on this platform.

The CE5300 media processor is a 4th-generation SoC. It features a dual Intel Atom core with support for hyperthreading and virtualization, advanced 3D/2D graphics engine, integrated power management, and H.264 B-picture hardware encoder.

Sanjay Rekhi, director, Asia Market Development, IPTV & Cable says "We expect that with this kind of silicon, set-top boxes (STB) will be much more powerful. We perceive them as smart TVs, and have developed a multiapplication framework where we can do simultaneously different applications."

"We at Intel are redefining what a smart TV is. We launched the concept of "smart TVs" a few years ago and with every new generation of chipset launched. We are bringing more unique user experiences and usage models to the home that benefit service providers, thereby increasing their market share. This makes it better for the end users. The same platform has a lot of usage—- not limited to a typical set top box."

Demonstration of the Intel multiple application framework (MAF), based on the Intel Atom CE4100, is available on an HTML 5 browser. The reference board was developed by the company and offers a customizable platform.
