Texas Instruments (TI) has unveiled the next generation of its integrated triple-output synchronous step-down switching regulators with smaller footprint and higher efficiency.
The TPS65261 and TPS65262 DC/DC converters feature small QFN packages and up to 96 per cent efficiency for such applications as digital television, set-top boxes, home gateway and access point networks, wireless routers, point-of-sale machines, and surveillance equipment.
The new family of DC/DC converters joins TI's family of multi-channel synchronous buck converters that include the TPS65250 and the TPS65251 developed for set-top box applications.
TPS65261 and TPS65262 feature 4.5V to 18V input supply voltage range for intermediate bus voltages operating off 5V, 9V, 12V or 15V power buses or batteries; constant frequency peak current mode that simplifies design and enables system optimisation; 5mm x 5mm x 0.9mm QFN package that is 44 per cent smaller than previous generation; and a 0.6V feedback reference that supports processors demanding lower output voltage.
The chips also have integrated automatic power up/down sequencing for easy power control. TPS65261 provides 82 per cent light load efficiency at 10mA and offers three outputs of rated current at 3A/2A/2A. It features an adjustable 250kHz to 2MHz switching frequency with pulse skipping. For forced continuous current operation without pulse skipping, TI offers the TPS65261-1.
TPS65262 provides fixed 600kHz switching operation and offers three outputs of rated current at 3A/1A/1A. Two integrated 200mA and 100mA low drop-out voltage linear regulators (LDOs) simplify board layout. For digital multimedia applications requiring higher current, TI offers the TPS65262-1 with integrated 350mA and 150mA LDOs.
Packaged in a 32pin QFN package, the TPS65261 is priced at $1.90 and the TPS65262 is priced at $2.05 in 1,000-unit quantities.
