Key technologies for digital devices

( 01 May 2007 )
by Aditya Agarwal, Product Marketing Manager, Wipro Technologies

A
bout 10 years ago, Wipro Technologies started its Global Product Division to develop licensable intellectual property cores. The first output of this group was intellectual property cores in physical and link layer for IEEE 1394 protocol.
IEEE 1394 (also known as Firewire) is a key technology for digital traffic, and the most
reliable, cost-effective, and efficient way to move audio and video data. IEEE 1394 has been designed for transporting and networking multiple types of digital data between users and systems, simply and with a quality that users
expect. It also has been constructed to move data to or through
systems that are busy with other tasks and applications without disruption.
As a pioneer in the IEEE1394 technology space, Wipro was among the first companies to have silicon proven 1394 IPs. The company’s IEEE 1394 IP portfolio consists of Physical and Link layer solution for both IEEE 1394a and IEEE 1394b with support for OHCI (open host controller interface) Protocol and AV Link Protocol.
Wipro also has generic drivers for 1394a and 1394b Link layers, software stacks for AV/C general command set and IEC 61883 series of specification, solution for SBP2/SBP3 protocol, and software stack for digital TV solution. It also has content protection solution based on 5C DTCP protocol to be used for 1394 bus, MOST bus, and Internet protocol.
Wipro, a leader in IEEE1394 IP sales, has more than 60 licences worldwide. It makes continuous investment in IEEE 1394 technology in terms of active participation in different specification developments, newer solution development, adapting existing cores to suit newer applications and maintaining the knowledge base.
Wipro’s customers for IEEE 1394 includes consumer electronics stalwarts like Emuzed, Epson, Indigita, MediaTek, and Zoran. They have used Wipro’s IP cores into different commercial products including camcorders, DVRs, set top boxes, and PC adapters. These IPs are also finding their way into newer areas such as automotive and digital television applications. The competencies derived from this IP have laid the foundation of next generation IPs from Wipro in the field of Wireless LAN, Bluetooth and UWB.

TECHNOLOGY PARTNER
Kazuaki Inoue, General Manager, IC Business Planning & Promotion Department of Seiko Epson Corporation, said, “Wipro’s sustained focus on this particular technology (IEEE 1394) vindicates our choice of Wipro as our technology partner. We have developed multiple products under S1R728/S1R729 Series for printers, storage devices (HDD, DVD) etc., based on the IPs licensed from Wipro, and have seen commercial success based on these products. We value Wipro’s commitment in the technology they invest in.” Seiko Epson is a leading supplier of advanced interface products and one of the earliest licensees of Wipro’s IEEE 1394 IPs.
James Snider, Executive Director of 1394 Trade Association, said, “Wipro has been a valued member of the 1394 Trade Association for many years making significant contributions to our standards.”
