2-in-1 CF controller is world's first

( 01 Aug 2002 )
— Chris Hall

ICSI of Taiwan has launched the world’s first combined single-chip camera and CF memory card 2-in-1 controller, the IC3102. With an embedded CMOS sensor interface, in addition to the usual functions of a CF memory card, this controller allows PDAs to capture still images or motion video and still function as a standard CF memory card.

Two pc boards are housed in the integrated camera card unit for PDAs.
This 2-in-1 controller is specifically designed for CompactFlash form factor cards for PDAs, and it instantly makes life easier for PDA end-users, who would normally need to carry an additional memory card, digital camera and other accessories.

This controller can support CMOS sensors of up to 500K pixels, for display resolutions of up to SVGA (800×600). In addition, it supports up to 128 Mbytes of CF card memory, in the form of 128 Mbytes of NAND flash. SDRAM is also supported.

There are 32 Kbytes of embedded programmable flash ROM, allowing users the option of software upgrades via the Internet, without the need to
power down the device in advance. This feature should extend the product’s lifecycle and reduce cost.
