The LED world is blossoming with white LEDs, which fit so many application needs in illumination, backlighting, and indication situations. To support these LEDs, IC vendors are providing components with the drive current and control that they require. The S-8813 from Seiko Instruments is a three-channel white-LED driver with a CMOS charge-pump circuit at its core. It provides constant-current output from its ultra-small SON10 package and uses tiny ceramic capacitors instead of larger alternative passives.
Seiko offers two variations of the IC. One version lets you set the output current linearly between 5 and 18 mA, by changing a control voltage applied to a current-set pin on the IC. The second version lets you set the current using a resistor connected to the IC. The ICs operate from a 2.7- to 4.5-V supply, with an internal clock frequency of 600 kHz; output-current accuracy is ±5%. The S-8813 family is US$1.20 in 10,000 piece lots.
