Reed switch comes in tiny glass package

( 01 Jun 2002 )
By Bill Schweber

While solid-state relays (SSRs) and switches get most of the attention, there are still many applications such as medical instrumentation or industrial sensors that require the old-fashioned mechanical type of switch elementbut with a size comparable to an SSR IC. The RI-80 from Coto Technology provides a reed switch in a glass package just 5 mm in length, which they claim is the industry’s smallest for this type of device. The unit is rated for 5W signal handling capacity, compatible with small-signal applications. You can activate the reed-switch elements in the sealed glass enclosure using either an electromagnet or a permanent magnet. Typical price is around US$1 for the reed switches.
