New Delhi: Tata Elxsi announced that it has achieved the world’s first implementation of Mozilla Firefox over Direct Frame Buffer (Direct FB). DirectFB provides hardware acceleration with low memory footprint for embedded platforms while Mozilla Firefox imparts open source browsing experience.
With the growing market for set-top-boxes and other embedded Linux-based devices, Mozilla Firefox-over-DirectFB provides a range of applications including access to the Internet via set-top boxes, Internet radio, new age GPS devices for collecting local information, and direct song downloads via MP3 players. Entertainment and advertisement agencies can exercise real-time control over billboard and point-of-sale (PoS) advertisements running on central servers. It also supports order-tracking and easy billing in retail stores.
It is said that the Mozilla Firefox and DirectFB implementation includes components such as GNASH Flash Plug-in to Mozilla, GNASH Flash Player and Libfad Flash Plug-in. The core development team at Tata Elxsi is now working on related components such as TVMS and Gstreamer, and new flavors of rich Internet applications for markets such as retail, entertainment and communication, sales and marketing, media, healthcare and social networking.
