The 42-V dc-supply auto electrical system is coming soon—whether in single (42-V-only) or dual-supply (12-/42-V) architectures—and power IC vendors are working to provide key devices that will make the new architectures practical. Specifically, a MOSFET family from International Rectifier offers 7-mW on-resistance, 10% lower than existing devices, yielding improved efficiency, lower power loss, and reduced heat dissipation. These 75-V rated MOSFETs, designated IRF3808, IRF3808S, and IRF3808L, feature low thermal resistance of 0.45°C/W or 0.75°C/W, depending on specific model. Available in TO-220, TO-262, and D2PAK packages, the TO-220 version meets the automotive industry Q101 qualification and has the lowest thermal resistance. All units are fully characterized for their repetitive avalanche performance, which defines the energy that they can withstand under various temperature, avalanche current, and duty-cycle conditions. Prices begin at US$1.95 in 10,000-piece lots.
