Power Integrations’ LinkSwitch power supply IC aims to replace current linear transformer designs in adapters and battery chargers rated at 3W and below. The device combines a 700-V power MOSFET, PWM controller, high voltage startup, current limit and thermal shutdown circuitry into a single 3-micron CMOS process chip. The IC claims to be the smallest, lightest, most energy-efficient device at equal or lower system cost.
The LNK501 enables a fault-protected, universal input (86 to 265 VAC), constant voltage, constant current (CV/CC) output that results in greater energy efficiency than linear transformer designs. The novel primary-based CV/CC solution combines the primary clamp, feedback, IC supply and loop compensation functions, and provides overload protection under output short circuit situations. Incorporation of the vendor’s proprietary EcoSmart technology further reduces energy consumption during standby and no-load situations, to meet worldwide energy efficiency standards (Blue, Angel, Energy Star and EC requirements). A typical no-load consumption at 85 to 265 VAC would be less than 300 mW, while efficiency for a typical full load case would ensure more than 70%. A 10% standby load case would ensure 60% efficiency.
The LNK501P, in a 3-W plastic DIP8 package, is priced at US$0.50 while the LNK501G, in an SMD-9 package, is priced at US$0.52 (10,000 pieces).
