(Top News, 21 Jun 2006 )

For the first time, the European Commission and ASEAN are jointly hosting “Euro-Southeast Asia 2006” (EUSEA2006) in Singapore this week to intensify collaboration in the field of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) and to pave the way for interconnection between the networks and services of the two regions.

EUSEA2006 comprises an international conference, the Euro-Southeast Asia 2006 Information and Communication Technologies Forum, from 19-20 June, and an European ICT Pavilion which will be hosted for the first time at the CommunicAsia2006 exhibition from 20-23 June.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Second Minister, Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, joined Mrs Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society & Media and ASEAN Secretary General Mr Ong Keng Yong in launching the Plenary Session of EUSEA2006 at Shangri-La Hotel this morning (Monday, 19 June 2006).

The EUSEA2006 event offers an open cooperation platform for Southeast Asian and European ICT players through business, regulatory and research dialogue and through strengthening external relations policy. More than 800 delegates from 66 countries have registered for the EUSEA2006 ICT Forum.

The TEIN2 Initiative

An important initiative between the EU and Asia is the Trans Euro-Asia Information Network Phase 2 (TEIN2), a large scale, data communications network for the research and education communities between Europe and Asia. The TEIN2 network began operations in January 2006, and it now provides the first direct route to Europe. Previously, most electronic communications between researchers in Asia and Europe went via North America. TEIN2 has its origins in the ASEM3 (Asia-Europe Meeting) Summit in Seoul in 2000 and the European
