BWA/WiMAX adoption in India will depend on low-cost connectivity

(Interviews, 19 Jul 2006 )

Research and Markets has announced the addition of India Broadband Wireless and WiMAX Market Analysis and Forecasts: 2006-2012 to their offering.

This study provides a detailed review of current regulatory and overall wireless market trends in India.

Broadband services were launched in India in 2005. ADSL services now cover 300 towns with 1.5 million connections while broadband wireless subscriber figures are still negligible. In a country where monthly broadband ARPU is estimated at $8-10, and computer penetration is still at around 4%, BWA / WiMAX adoption will depend on very low cost end-to-end pricing for connectivity including the compute platform and CPE. The Indian telecom sector operates in a volume-driven market. If WiMAX is to succeed it will only be on the premise of huge volumes not, small deployments.

The authors of this study are Sridhar Pai and Adlane Fellah.

Sridhar Pai has spent over 13 years working in the global telecom industry and most recently was director of marketing at IntelliNet Technologies Inc., a leading signaling infrastructure developer. Prior to that, Sridhar was head of VoIP business at Network Solutions. He also was part of the original team that incubated the softswitch product at Xybridge Technologies Inc (later acquired by Zhone Technologies). Sridhar started his career with Motorola ISG group, which covers Singapore and India. His functional expertise has been technology research, product marketing and marketing communications for the telecom industry.

Adlane Fellahhas worked for over 9 years in the telecom industry, including 3 years as Marketing Manager for the BWA Clearburst product line at Harris Corporation, in charge of all point-tomultipoint market intelligence. He has extensive experience with both the tactical dimension of sales support and the strategic vision and analysis to feed product development. He also has an extensive knowledge of regulatory affairs as well as financial modeling, through his tenure as senior consultant with the telecom-consulting firm Lemay-Yates Associates Inc. Mr. Fellah holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of British Columbia.
