WLAN Security Still Weak in Most Businesses

(Interviews, 10 Oct 2006 )

Despite the ratification of key wireless standards, the actual use of stronger security mechanisms in current WLAN deployments is low, reports In-Stat. That may soon change, however, as many companies will bolster WLAN security over the next several years, the high-tech market research firm says. Within wireless security, In-Stat has identified two addressable markets: security for portable devices, and security to protect network operations and assets in the business premises. Together, these markets are projected to reach $4.4 billion by 2010.

"For WLANs to successfully move beyond limited installations in 'carpeted' conference rooms and lobbies, businesses must employ a variety of security mechanisms," says Victoria Fodale, In-Stat analyst. "Much of the security revenue for business clients will be generated by solutions that protect data when it is transmitted or stored on portable devices, including enterprise platforms that centrally manage and provision encryption applications."

Recent research by In-Stat found the following:

- In a recent In-Stat survey, more than 70% of the respondents say they use WLANs in their businesses.
- Between now and 2010, close to 460 million new client devices with wireless capability will ship to business premises, including mobile PCs and Wi-Fi handsets.
- In the business premises, mobile PCs with embedded Wi-Fi and business combo Wi-Fi/cellular phones, combined, will comprise 94.9% of clients by 2010.

The research, ‘Mobility and Security: The Perfect Storm Ahead’, examines the type and volume of wireless devices that In-Stat has forecasted for the business segment. Both WLAN client and equipment forecasts are included. The research also reviews technology and security standards that have influenced the market. Past, current, and planned standards are discussed, including IEEE 802.1i and the controversial WAPI standard from China. In addition, the research takes a look at the state of wireless security including the results of a recent end-user survey.
