Tokyo, Japan-based DRAM player Elpida Memory Inc. has announced that it has reached a basic agreement with China foundry Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) and Cension Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. to sell Elpida's 200mm wafer processing equipment to Cension. The equipment transferred to Cension will be operated by SMIC, Elpida said.
Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Elpida said the move was an important one for its Hiroshima Elpida Memory Inc. subsidiary, so that it can devote company resources to achieving a 300mm line.
This is not the first time Elpida and SMIC have worked together. Last year, Elpida's 512Mbit DDR2 SDRAM was qualified on a 90nm manufacturing process at SMIC's 300mm facility in Beijing.
