Freescale backed by comprehensive ecosystem support for flagship multi-core telematics processor

(Top News, 13 Sep 2007 )

Five industry-leading development tool and real-time operating system (RTOS) vendors today announced their support for Freescale Semiconductor's MPC5121e system-on-chip processor. Built on Power Architecture technology, the multi-core MPC5121e processor is Freescale's most powerful, highly integrated device for telematics applications, as well as industrial and commercial applications that require sophisticated graphics, multimedia and real-time audio processing.

Freescale offers telematics system developers a broad range of support for the MPC5121e, including the CodeWarrior Development Studio mobileGT Processor Edition and a Linux OS Board Support Package (BSP) optimized for the mobileGT architecture and the MPC5121e development platform. The MPC5121e processor platform is also backed by a growing ecosystem of tool and RTOS vendors, including ALT Software, Green Hills Software, QNX Software Systems, Tilcon Software and Wind River. Each company is a member of the mobileGT Alliance, which includes key vendors in the automotive telematics industry.

"The launch of the MPC5121e processor in May has sparked a groundswell of customer interest and broad industry support," said Mike Bryars, manager of Freescale's Global Telematics Operations. "The rapid proliferation of world-class development tools and RTOS options for the MPC5121e makes it easier and more cost-effective for developers to bring new and innovative telematics solutions to market."

"Freescale is demonstrating a higher vision and fulfilling a demand for high-performance embedded graphics in the marketplace with the MPC5121e," said Dan Joncas, vice president of sales at ALT Software. "2D/3D graphics will be an essential building block in next-generation embedded applications, and by partnering with ALT Software, who brings more than 10 years of 2D/3D graphics experience, Freescale can deliver to the market a total solution with exceptional performance, quality and support for their customers."

"The MPC5121e is an impressive processor for telematics applications based on a powerful multi-core architecture and rich peripheral set," said Robert Redfield, director of partner business development at Green Hills Software. "Green Hills' software solutions and business models map well to the MPC5121e and its markets, providing 3D/2D graphics, highly reliable/secure INTEGRITY RTOS with comprehensive middleware, royalty-free pricing, silicon-optimized C/C++/MISRA C compilers and leading debug technologies for this device. This combined hardware/software solution will be a powerful enabler for designers to realize lower cost and faster time to volume for their next-generation products in automotive, industrial and medical markets."

"Our automotive customers are always looking for the latest hardware and software tools for developing telematics applications that will stand the test of time once the cars leave the showroom," said Dave Curley, vice president of marketing at QNX Software Systems. "Freescale's MPC5121e makes it easier than ever for our customers to quickly transition their QNX-based automotive telematics systems to take advantage of the enhanced performance and power efficiency offered in this extended line of processors."

"Tilcon, a long-time mobileGT alliance partner, applauds the release of the MPC5121e," said Prosanto Sarkar, CEO of Tilcon Software Ltd. "This feature-rich processor will enable the complex graphics and rich user interfaces that Tilcon specializes in, and we believe it will be very well received by embedded developers. Tilcon will be tightly integrating its toolkit with the MPC5121e and is pleased to work within Freescale's mobileGT alliance to provide comprehensive graphics solutions meeting the requirements of Freescale's diverse customer base."

"As a longtime Freescale partner, Wind River plans to offer board support packages for Freescale's exciting, next-generation MPC5121e, for both VxWorks and Wind River Linux, supported by Workbench, Wind River's Eclipse-based common development environment," said Vincent Rerolle, vice president of corporate development and strategy at Wind River. "Telematics, consumer and industrial customers can accelerate their time to market based on our tightly integrated hardware, tools and OS platform."
