DisplaySearch increases 2007 notebook PC forecast to 103 million units due to strong demand

(Business News, 25 Sep 2007 )

Q2'07 proved to be a strong quarter for the notebook PC industry on a global scale, experiencing strong demand above typical seasonal levels. Specifically, shipments were 24.1 million on a unit basis, up 4% Q/Q and 40% Y/Y. Also of note, wide notebook penetration approached 90% in the quarter, and North America surpassed all other regions with 36.5% of all notebook PC shipping into that region in the quarter.

"There is typically a slight downturn in notebook PCs shipments in Q2 because of seasonality; however, Q2'07 reversed the historical trend driven by strong demand from consumers, enterprises and emerging markets such as India and China. Based on the strong Q2'07 results and anticipated Q3'07 demand, DisplaySearch has increased the 2007 forecast to 103 million units, up from 97.5 million units," noted John F. Jacobs, Director of Notebook Market Research at DisplaySearch, worldwide leader in display market research and consulting.

DisplaySearch revealed these results in the Q3'07 Quarterly Notebook PC Shipment and Forecast Report. The firm also reported that HP maintained its leading position in worldwide notebook PC shipments for the third consecutive quarter, with 4.7 million units shipped. In addition, HP was the #1 ranked supplier in EMEA, Latin America and APAC. Also noteworthy, HP has shipped a million more notebook PCs than its closest competitor, Dell, for the past three quarters. Dell ranked #1 in North America notebook PC shipments with 1.9M units shipped in this region. In Q2, Lenovo exceeded 2 million NB PCs, and Apple exceeded one million units for the first time.

Additional details from Q2'07 as well as forecasts by size and resolution are in DisplaySearch's Quarterly Notebook PC Shipment and Forecast Report including a detailed look at all aspects of the notebook PC market, long-term forecasts by size and resolution, the notebook PC display supply chain, and market share by brand.
