Industry’s most comprehensive portfolio of professional and broadcast video products

(Technology News, 26 Sep 2007 )

National Semiconductor Corporation has introduced seven new products for professional and broadcast video applications. These integrated circuits help video-system design engineers differentiate their end products. These new products join the industry’s most comprehensive portfolio that includes serial digital interface (SDI), precision timing, analog video, low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS), signal conditioning, performance audio and power management products.

National’s seven new products include: the industry’s smallest and lowest jitter 3 Gbps (3G) SDI reclocker; the lowest-power standard-definition (SD) SDI equalizer; the lowest power SD-SDI cable driver; a pair of wide-bandwidth, low crosstalk 8 x 4 analog crosspoint switches; the industry’s best bandwidth-to-power ratio triple operational amplifier (op amp); and a selectable gain buffer.
National's LMH0356 is the industry's smallest, lowest-jitter 3 Gbps SDI reclocker with input mux. Each input has an integrated power-saver FR-4 equalizer to optimize signal integrity for trace lengths up to 30 inches long. The LMH0356 provides the industry’s best output jitter performance at 0.09 unit intervals (peak-to-peak), with input jitter tolerance at 0.6 unit intervals. It supports the new Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) 424M specification for serial uncompressed transmission of 1080p high-definition broadcast video signals up to 60 frames per second and is fully backward compatible with National's HD and SD reclockers.

National is the only semiconductor supplier to offer a truly complete 3 Gbps SDI portfolio of products, including equalizer (LMH0344), reclockers (LMH0356 and LMH0346), cable driver (LMH0302), serializer (LMH0340), deserializer (LMH0341) and crosspoint switch (DS25CP104). All National 3G-SDI products have pin-compatible HD and SD versions, allowing designers to complete a single design and populate boards according to the required maximum data rate standard, such as SD, HD or 3G.

Key Features – LMH0356 3 Gbps Multi-Rate SDI Reclocker
The LMH0356 supports SMPTE 424M, SMPTE 292M and SMPTE 259M standards and operates at serial data rates of 270 Mbps, 1.483 Gbps, 1.485 Gbps, 2.967 Gbps and 2.97 Gbps. It also supports DVB-ASI operation at 270 Mbps. The device consumes 440 mW of power from a single 3.3V supply. The LMH0356 operates from a single, low-cost 27 MHz reference crystal and is supplied in a small 48-LLP® package that is half the size of competitive devices.

Key Features – LMH0074 SD-SDI Cable Equalizer
National's LMH0074 SD-SDI cable equalizer operates over a wide range of data rates from 143 Mbps to 540 Mbps and supports SMPTE 259M and SMPTE 344M standards. It automatically adapts and equalizes up to 400m of coaxial cable (Belden 1694A) – 50m longer reach than competitive equalizers – with 0.2 unit intervals typical output jitter. It offers the industry’s lowest power, typically consuming only 208 mW from a 3.3V supply. It also offers the industry's highest ESD rating of 8 kV human body model (HBM) and is fully backward compatible with National's HD and 3 Gbps multi-rate equalizers, the LMH0044 and LMH0344, respectively. The LMH0074 is supplied in a 16-pin LLP package.

Key Features – LMH0001 SD-SDI Cable Driver
National's LMH0001 is the industry's lowest power SD-SDI cable driver and is designed for use in SMPTE 259M and SMPTE 344M serial digital video applications. The device drives 75 Ohm transmission lines (Belden 8281, Belden 1694A or equivalent) at data rates up to 540 Mbps, and consumes only 125 mW of power from a 3.3V supply. The LMH0001 boasts the industry's highest ESD rating of 5 kV for HBM to protect systems from repetitive cable connections and disconnections. It is the only SD-SDI cable driver capable of operating across the industrial temperature range from -40 degrees C to 85 degrees C. The LMH0001 is supplied in a 16-pin LLP package.

Key Features – LMH6580 and LMH6581 8 x 4 Analog Crosspoint Switches
National’s LMH6580 and LMH6581 are fully buffered, non-blocking 8 x 4 analog crosspoint switches that support video resolutions of UXGA (1600 x 1200) and beyond. The LMH6580 and LMH6581 provide a fixed gain of 1 and gain of 2, respectively. Both versions feature an industry-best -3 dB bandwidth of 500 MHz and a 0.1 dB gain flatness out to 100 MHz, ensuring adequate bandwidth for any video application. In addition, the low channel-to-channel crosstalk of -52 dBc at 100 MHz increases picture clarity by minimizing video artifacts and shadows from adjacent channels. Each buffered output can drive up to two back-terminated 75 Ohm video loads. The LMH6580 and LMH6581 are supplied in a 48-pin TQFP package. They feature diagonally symmetrical pin assignments to facilitate double-sided board layouts and expansion applications. These devices are the latest additions to National’s 550 MHz analog crosspoint family, which include the 16 x 8 LMH6582 and LMH6583.

Key Features – LMH6733 Triple Op Amp and LMH6734 Triple Selectable Gain Buffer
National’s LMH6733 single-supply, 1 GHz triple op amp and LMH6734 925 MHz triple selectable gain buffer are designed for use in high-resolution video systems. The LMH6733 provides an industry-best 153.8 MHz/mA bandwidth-to-power ratio and the industry’s largest 0.1 dB gain flatness at 320 MHz. The LMH6733’s input voltage range and output voltage swing are optimized for operation on supplies as low as 3V and up to 10V, while only consuming 5.5 mA per amplifier from a single 5V supply. The LMH6733 provides stable operation with an externally set gain range from 1 V/V to 10 V/V. At a gain of 2 V/V, the LMH6733 offers 600 MHz of large signal bandwidth (2Vpp), which is suitable for many high resolution video applications, such as video matrix switchers and conference room and KVM systems. The LMH6733 is supplied in a space-saving 16-pin SSOP package.

The LMH6734 is a high-speed selectable gain buffer that offers a selectable internal gain of −1, 1 and 2. At a gain of 2, the LMH6734 supports ultra-high-resolution video systems with a -3 dB large signal bandwidth (2Vpp) of 560 MHz. With its large signal bandwidth and low supply current of 5.6 mA per channel, the LMH6734 is well-suited for applications requiring wideband performance and low power consumption or driving component analog and high-resolution video in wideband applications, including matrix switchers, conference room systems and video over CAT5 cable. The LMH6734 is supplied in a space-saving 16-pin SSOP package. These devices join National’s portfolio of high performance analog video products, which includes amplifiers, crosspoint switches, multiplexers, video converters and sync separators, such as the LMH1980 and LMH1981.
