Infineon receives National Technology Award 2007 in Singapore for VDSL2 Research

(Top News, 28 Sep 2007 )

Infineon Technologies, a global semiconductor supplier for communications, automobile, security and industry applications, has announced that its Communication Technology Research & Development (R&D) team in Singapore has been selected to receive the 2007 National Technology Award.

As part of the National Science and Technology Awards, the National Technology Award recognizes scientists and engineers who have made outstanding contributions to R&D resulting in significant technology with industrial applications. The award confirms Infineon’s outstanding research on “VDSL2 (Very High Bit Rate Digital Subscriber Line) Transceiver for high data rate communication of up to 250 Mbps over Telephone/ISDN lines for end-to-end next generation Central Office and Residential Customer Premises Equipment Gateway solutions.”

“We are very pleased to see key R&D activities carried out by major semiconductor companies in Singapore. This year, Infineon Technologies is the only company in the private sector who has won the award. Their commitment to R&D will serve as an inspiration for the scientific community in Singapore,” said Prof Cham Tao Soon, Chairman of the National Technology Award Judging Panel and Chairman, Board of Trustees, SIM University.

The symmetrical nature of the VDSL2 platform, offering similar bandwidth rates when uploading or downloading data, will meet the increasing consumer demand for upstream bandwidth driven by new Web applications. Some of these emerging applications include video blogs, telecommuting, peer-to-peer applications, videoconferencing and interactive gaming. Providing a dedicated aggregated data rates of up to 250 Mbits downstream and upstream, VDSL2 enables a faster and more robust experience on the Internet. Infineon’s VDSL2 solution is now commercially deployed by Deutsche Telekom – Europe’s largest telecoms group, and Korea’s Hyundai Network Systems.

“The award has brought the Singapore R&D team at Infineon on the forefront in contributing and developing new technologies. Infineon has made major contributions towards the foundation of the VDSL2 standard by contributing to a significant number of papers on the development of the standard,” said Mr Jain Raj Kumar, Senior Principal, Chief Architect for the Wireline Communications, System Engineering Division at Infineon Development Centre in Singapore. “With a rich experience in the VDSL2 arena, we have overcome the many challenges in the research and filed multiple patent applications. We will continue to research and develop on future broadband technologies, and Infineon is excited by the many new technological breakthroughs made possible through research.”
For the outstanding contribution to the next generation, high performance connectivity through broadband telecommunication system, Mr. Raj Kumar Jain, Dr. Sim Hak Keong, Dr. Goh Chee Kiang, and Mr. Teo Tee Yong from Infineon’s Communications Technology R&D unit, representing the mainly Singapore-based project team will be awarded the 2007 National Technology Award. The award was presented by Mr Lim Hng Kiang, Minister for Trade and Industry, at the National Science and Technology Awards Dinner held at Meritus Mandarin Hotel Singapore.
