DASH Technology for standards-based enterprise PC manageability

(Technology News, 04 Oct 2007 )

Marvell, a leader in storage, communications, and consumer silicon solutions, has announced it is demonstrating Marvell Yukon technology for advanced PC manageability based on the Desktop and Mobile Architecture for System Hardware (DASH) standard, at the Fall Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco.

DASH is a new standards-based architecture from the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) that brings a new level of IT tracking and control for Enterprise PCs. It is designed to allow IT managers to securely and remotely track, inventory, query and manage DASH-based PCs. IT managers are also expected to be able to remotely diagnose and rectify a number of common PC failure conditions, even if a DASH-based PC fails to power up.

Marvell is a Leadership member of the DMTF workgroup chartered with the creation of the DASH industry standard. Marvell is also working closely with ecosystem vendors, including leading chipset and console providers, to ensure a seamless adoption of this new technology within its PC OEM customer base.

“With the rapid enablement of DASH technology, Marvell is continuing to increase its leadership role in Enterprise PC manageability and security technology,” said David Young, vice president and general manager, Connectivity Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Business Group. “Marvell’s innovative Yukon controllers are enabling IT managers to meet the escalating challenges of managing an organization’s dispersed PCs, while coping with the increasing demands for data protection, network security and government compliance.”

Marvell is already at the forefront of enterprise PC security technology with the roll out earlier this year of the industry’s first LAN controller based on the Media Access Control Security (MACSec) standard. MACSec is designed to protect an enterprise’s data and network from unauthorized stations, securing wired Ethernet and protecting LANs from attacks such as passive wiretapping, masquerading, man-in-the-middle and some denial-of-service attacks.

Marvell’s Yukon products include a family of pin-compatible LAN controllers that use a common software driver. This approach provides PC vendors with significant flexibility in leveraging a single Yukon motherboard design across a variety of platforms, offering a range of performance and functionality options, including enterprise PC manageability and LAN security.
