NEC and Beceem introduce end-to-end Mobile WiMAX Wave 2 solution

(Technology News, 06 Nov 2007 )

NEC Corporation and Beceem Communications have developed an end-to-end Mobile WiMAX Wave 2 solution, jointly developed by NEC and Beceem.

NEC's Mobile WiMAX Wave 2 solution consists of the following 3 systems:

· The Access Service Network (ASN), which provides the basic wireless access functionality. The ASN consists of one or more wireless Base Stations (BS) and a controlling Access Service Network Gateway (ASN-GW).

· The Connectivity Services Network (CSN), which provides IP connectivity, services and management. The CSN incorporates the AAA, Home Agent and IMS core.

· Mobile Terminals, which provide wireless access functions and support mobility. NEC offers indoor and outdoor CPEs and PC accessory modems, and is also supporting the open WiMAX terminal ecosystem.

In developing its Mobile WiMAX solution NEC has chosen Beceem as core technology partner for the WiMAX airlink. Under their collaboration Beceem has delivered to NEC key aspects of the WiMAX airlink implementation of NEC's WiMAX base station. In addition NEC is using Beceem's BCS200 terminal chipset for its lineup of Mobile WiMAX terminals. The close collaboration with Beceem is focused on the WiMAX airlink and terminal chipset. This ensures that NEC can leverage its core networking strength while incorporating a field-proven high-performance WiMAX airlink, thus blending NEC's excellence as a System Integrator with the WiMAX performance leadership of Beceem, offering to operators a complete best-of-breed Mobile WiMAX system solution.

NEC has participated in the last 2 WiMAX Forum Mobile WiMAX plugfests and is already engaged in a number of trials with WiMAX operators in Asia, the Americas and Europe demonstrating the capabilities of its complete solution. NEC is an active participant in the WiMAX Taipei= Showcase, where NEC has demonstrated its cutting edge technology in a live mobile WiMAX demo that also included value added applications such as remote medical services. Commercial shipments of NEC's WiMAX solution are expected in the first half of 2008.

Beceem was the first to release terminal chipsets for the Wave 1 and
Wave 2 feature sets of the Mobile WiMAX profile and Beceem's customers
are using both chipsets for commercial product that is being shipped
into networks and trials deployments around the world.
