SiGe Semiconductor expands design and application capabilities in Asia with strategic move to Hong Kong Science and Technology Park

(Top News, 19 Nov 2007 )

SiGe Semiconductor, a leading global supplier of radio frequency (RF) solutions for wireless systems, has unveiled plans to expand in Asia by relocating its Hong Kong operations to one of Asia’s leading innovation hubs, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP). The move is in line with SiGe’s strategy to deliver the best technology in conjunction with consolidated application design support. SiGe’s new HKSTP facility will occupy 7,522 sq. ft., an area three times that of its previous location. It will encompass design, applications, operations sales and customer support functions, including expanded engineering and applications lab facilities to keep pace with the increased demand for the company’s portfolio of products.

The move is expected to enhance significantly SiGe’s local research and development capabilities, and highlights the company’s commitment to Greater China and Asia. The new facility will also support SiGe’s local sales and operations functions.

Commenting on the relocation, SiGe Semiconductor CEO Sohail Khan said, “HKSTP provides an ideal location for our design team to meet our customers’ needs by continuing to develop innovative solutions. The high quality infrastructure and support facilities provided by HKSTP will improve our working environment, and in turn we hope that this will result directly in efficiency gains. The strong link with local universities and applied research institutes is very exciting and should provide recruitment opportunities for local engineers to join SiGe.”

SiGe is at the forefront of wireless technology, providing components that enable WiMAX, Wi-Fi and GNSS capability in mobile devices, laptops, wireless data equipment and navigation systems.

With more than 200 million SiGe solutions in the market already and shipping rates of approximately 25 million a quarter, SiGe continues to supply the world’s leading technology companies, including HP, Apple Computer, Lenovo, Nintendo, Samsung and Motorola.

HKSTP is a hub for innovation that brings people and technology together. It is a US$1.5 billion project occupying a total area of 22 hectares. HKSTP empowers innovation and technology development by placing participating tenants in focused technology sector clusters encompassing electronics, biotechnology, precision engineering and the information technology and telecommunications industries.

Sohail Khan concluded, “We believe this relocation to HKSTP is an important step for SiGe and our staff and clients in Greater China and Asia. We are confident this latest investment in the region and in its people will bring dividends over the longer term.”
