Next-generation, long-life, fast charging, environmentally responsible notebook computer battery

(Technology News, 06 Dec 2007 )

Boston-Power, Inc. an emerging provider of portable power solutions, has announced that its next-generation lithium-ion batteries are being released to the market. Manufactured in China, the company’s latest technology delivers a compelling, cost-effective alternative for manufacturers, OEMs and consumers.

Boston-Power’s batteries last longer, recharge faster and have unique chemistry and design features that ensure safety. Additionally, Boston-Power’s more environmentally responsible product and process designs bring benefits to China.

Global consumer-led demand for longer-lasting batteries continues to rise. However, the industry's drive for higher initial capacity and lower cost has come at the expense of real-life performance and quality. Safety concerns have also been prompted due to recent battery pack failures that have led to fires. Boston-Power’s novel approach to battery system design overcomes those challenges by using proprietary safety features that include slower chemical kinetics along with unique current interrupt devices, thermal fuses and pressure relief vents.

Boston-Power’s environmentally responsible batteries “drop in” to existing OEM notebook computers. Delivering unmatched run-time retention, its Sonata™ cells last substantially longer than traditional batteries while providing like-new battery performance for the entire three-year design life of a notebook. Most notebook users today need to buy multiple current-generation batteries during that timeframe. Additionally, Sonata provides notebook users with the industry’s fastest recharge time – 80 percent capacity in just 30 minutes, which is 50-200 percent faster than standard batteries depending on notebook model.

Boston-Power batteries are designed and manufactured to foster a cleaner, safer environment. At Boston-Power, safety is not negotiable, nor an item to be traded for added performance. Boston-Power’s initial offering, the Sonata™ product line of notebook batteries, uses less reactive chemicals and applies multiple redundant protective controls. Independent testing has revealed that Sonata batteries minimize metal pollution by not using detrimental heavy metals. As a result, Sonata is the only rechargeable lithium-ion battery to earn an internationally recognized environmental certification.
