The organizers of the 21st International VLSI Conference have announced an International Student Conference providing an opportunity for 2,000 student delegates to participate and to interact with leading VLSI and embedded systems architects, technology experts and, to take part in a series of technology and product presentations at the VLSI Conference and 7th International Conference on Embedded Systems. Focusing on the next generation challenges and opportunities in multicore processor design, the conferences will be held at the at High Tech International Convention Center (HICC) in Hyderabad from January 4 to 8, 2008.
Maintaining the tradition of the conference, the three-day technical program of the joint conference on January 6 to 8 will feature keynote and plenary talks from world leaders, with high-quality technical paper presentations that reflect the state-of-the-art in VLSI design and embedded systems. It also includes embedded tutorials, a panel discussion, and a parallel track for industry forum.
Dirk Meyer, AMD's President and COO, will be presenting the opening keynote speech followed by the Plenary Keynote Address by Mentor Graphics' CEO Wally Rhines—About New Paradigm within India - Why Experience is Sometimes a Bottleneck. Other keynote speakers include Alain Artieri, Senior System Architect, STMicroelectronics, France, who will address the system design challenges and solutions for future nanoscale process technologies, and Anantha Chandrakasan, MIT Design, who will discuss the "Considerations for Next Generation Micro-Power Systems."
Making the Students Conference announcement for the first time in the conference history, Dasaradha R Gude, General Chair and Organizing Chair of the VLSI Committee 2008, said: “The conference founders recognize the importance of supporting VLSI and embedded processor design education. While our formal education teaches us the basics for managing a particular subject, it is important to realize how vital the industry participation is for the development of student orientation to deal with reality of their career and prospects.

Apart from power packed keynote speech and plenary sessions, leading EDA and IT companies will be displaying their products from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm during January 6-8, 2008 at the technical exhibition and industry forum. Vendor presentations and panel discussion on industry on emerging VLSI and Embedded systems topics will take the center stage over a separate parallel track during the three days.
Another attraction for students in this year’s conference is the “Student Design Contest – VLSI 2008” for operational and conceptual designs that are open to full-time graduate and undergraduates. The aim of the student contest is to promote excellence in the design of electronics systems in universities and educational establishments by providing a venue for students to showcase their designs.
