NComputing eliminates 55,000 tons of carbon emissions with breakthrough green computing technology

NComputing, the leading provider of desktop virtualization software and hardware, has announced that its technology is helping schools, businesses and organizations worldwide dramatically reduce carbon emissions by cutting energy consumption up to 90 percent. With more than 500,000 virtual PC seats deployed in 70 countries, NComputing has cut electricity consumption by 88 million kilowatts per year, compared with the same number of PCs. This represents a reduction of 55,000 metric tons of carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

According to experts, more than $250 billion worth of energy per year is spent on powering computers around the world. As organizations search for practical and immediate ways to save money and reduce the IT impact on global climate change, they are increasingly turning to the NComputing virtual PCs. "The NComputing X300 requires 99% less electricity to run and greatly reduces maintenance and replacement costs," said Ivo Ivanovski, Minister for the Information Society in the Republic of Macedonia, which is deploying more than 180,000 virtual PC seats throughout its nation's school system to provide 1-to-1 computer access to all students. "This offers significant cost advantages over using individual PCs."

The NComputing solution is based on a simple fact: today's PCs are so powerful that the vast majority of applications only use a small fraction of the computer's capacity. NComputing's virtualization software and hardware tap this unused capacity so that it can be simultaneously shared by multiple users. The NComputing virtualization software is loaded onto a standard Windows or Linux PC. Each user's monitor, keyboard, and mouse connect to the shared PC through a small and highly reliable NComputing access device. The device itself has no CPU, memory, or moving parts so it is easy to deploy and maintain. Over 500,000 NComputing systems have been deployed by 15,000 organizations to slash their computing costs as much as 70% and electric consumption by 90%.

Numerous schools that pride themselves in having a low carbon emission designation use NComputing technology. Lindsay Elementary School in Kimberly, B.C., for example, recently replaced 38 conventional PCs in a computer lab, the library and a resource room with NComputing's energy-efficient PC stations. As a result, the school estimates that it is reducing its carbon emissions by 3.5 tons per year, using 5000 kilowatt hours less electricity. Over the eight-year lifecycle of the computer lab, this will result in an e-waste reduction of 800 lbs.

"This world's increasing reliance on computers and energy demands new solutions," said Stephen Dukker, Chairman and CEO of NComputing. "NComputing is radically changing the economics and the environmental impact of the PC experience worldwide. If just 20% of the world's 850 million PC users switched to NComputing, the annual carbon dioxide emissions would be reduced by 18.7 million tons. This is equivalent to planting more than two million trees. Put another way, it's the equivalent of eliminating 5 typical 500-megawatts coal power plants."

In addition to the electricity reduction, the NComputing virtual PCs also greatly reduce the amount of e-waste that piles up in landfills every year. According to the Environmental Impact Assessment Review (July 2005), between 1994 and 2003, PC disposal resulted in 718,000 tons of lead, 287 tons of mercury, and 1,363 tons of cadmium being placed in landfills. As PC penetration continues to increase worldwide, the e-waste problem will only get worse. Fortunately, the NComputing device is far smaller, lighter and contains far fewer electronic parts compared to a PC. In fact, NComputing virtual PCs reduce e-waste by 98% because they weigh less than one-third of a pound (compared to 20 pounds for a typical PC).
