Freescale microcontroller expands 8-bit headroom for industrial and automotive designers

(Product News, 12 May 2008 )

As power budgets tighten and the demand for more embedded content increases, the need for highly integrated, high-performance microcontrollers (MCU) becomes essential. To address this need in the industrial and automotive markets, Freescale has added a powerful new member to its S08D family that offers exceptional 8-bit performance and on-chip functionality.

Freescale’s highly integrated 9S08DZ128 MCU features a controller area network (CAN) interface, electronically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) and on-chip emulation/debug tools. The embedded CAN interface provides an ideal connectivity solution for many automotive and industrial control applications. Embedded EEPROM enhances system design flexibility by enabling data to be written and erased with ease and eliminates the need for external serial EEPROM. Integrated development tools with on-chip debug enable designers to debug quickly in real-time, speeding time to market. Each of these integrated capabilities is available across the full automotive temperature range of -40 degrees C to 125 degrees C.

In the automotive market, the 9S08DZ128 MCU targets body, chassis, safety and powertrain control. Prime industrial control applications include factory and building automation, security systems, health-care equipment, and aircraft and aerospace electronics.

Power efficient by design
Manufactured on Freescale’s 0.25-micron process technology and scaling up to 40 MHz, the 9S08DZ128 is designed to deliver high performance within a low power envelope. By keeping power consumption low, the 9S08DZ128 MCU allows automotive design engineers to continue increasing vehicle electronics content within existing 12V battery capacities. This low-power functionality makes the device ideal for power-sensitive automotive applications, such as sunroof and seat control, steering and chassis systems.
