Numonyx, the offspring of chip heavyweights Intel and STMicroelectronics, has opened its Global Distribution Center in Singapore. DHL International GmbH has been appointed as the company’s strategic logistics service provider to manage all related inbound and outbound traffic of finished goods.
The company’s decision to establish its distribution hub in Asia is a telling sign of the growing demand for NAND and NOR memories in the region. Numonyx currently ships 70 percent of its products to electronic manufacturers in Asia, 20 percent to Europe, and 10 percent to North America. Singapore was selected for its central location, strong logistics infrastructure, excellent connectivity to global airports and its stable and progressive political environment.
“The new centre of logistics excellence will provide Numonyx significant supply chain efficiencies that will enhance our business competitiveness,” said Mathieu Clerkx, senior VP and general manager for Global Infrastructure, Numonyx. “Our back-end manufacturing sites, as well as distribution centre in this region will help us achieve faster time-to-market, which is critical for our customers.”
In a speech during the opening ceremony, Manohar Khiatani, assistant managing director, Singapore Economic Development Board, said, “We have adopted a three-pronged strategy to strengthen Singapore’s semiconductor industry further. First, we will help companies to grow their wafer fabrication operations to reap economies of scale. Next, we will develop strong process R&D capabilities to ensure that the wafer fabrication plants in Singapore are at the cutting edge of process technologies. Finally, we will develop a vibrant semiconductor ecosystem. Wafer fabrication will be complemented by advanced assembly and test and IC design, and supported by a strong base of materials, chemicals, and equipment suppliers. The presence of strong wafer fabs like Numonyx certainly adds value to the ecosystem. We are delighted that Numonyx has decided to site its Global Distribution Centre in Singapore.”
