OmniVision Technologies Inc., independent supplier of CMOS image sensors, introduced the ¼ inch, 5 megapixel system-on-chip (SoC) image sensor based on OmniVision’s new OmniBSI technology. The new OV5642 represents OmniVision’s advanced sensor, combining its 1.4-micron OmniBSI pixel with its top of the line TrueFocus image signal processor (ISP). OmniBSI technology enables the OV5642 to deliver quality low-light performance (>500mV/Lux-sec), while the advanced embedded TrueFocus ISP provides the functionality of a complete camera on a chip including extended depth of field (EDoF).
Bruce Weyer, vice president of marketing at OmniVision, said, “The OV5642 represents a ‘best-of-both-worlds’ solution for our customers, in terms of sensor performance and image processing. By employing OmniBSI technology, we are able to embed our most powerful TrueFocus ISP on the sensor without expanding silicon real estate or moving to more expensive process nodes. The OV5642 gives our customers a cost effective road-map to even higher-quality, higher-performance mobile phone designs.”
