New Littelfuse SEP Series SIDACtor Devices Maintain Signal Quality while Providing Protection for High-Speed Ethernet and PoE Applications

(Product News, 10 Nov 2008 )

Littelfuse has announced the new SEP (SIDACtor Ethernet Protector) Series protection devices, the latest addition to its Broadband Optimized family of SIDACtor brand Thyristor overvoltage protection devices. These new Ethernet protection devices provide robust overvoltage protection that will not degrade 10BaseT, 100BaseT, and 1,000BaseT data rates.

Telecommunications companies are increasingly providing broadband communications rates that are sufficient for the high-speed data delivery required by voice, data, and video applications. The final connection in these systems, typically to a customer’s building, must operate in, and be protected from, a harsh environment. The challenge is to protect circuits without degrading the signal, which can increase bit error rates and reduce the distance signals can travel. The SEP Series Ethernet protection devices protect these data connections and ensure a robust and reliable network.

The SEP Series SIDACtor devices integrate a biased-bridge isolation compensation circuit, which results in a capacitive loading characteristic that is linear with respect to the voltage across the device. Coupling the biasing pin, which maintains low off-state loading effects, with an internal compensating network, makes this one of the most linear vs. voltage capacitance overvoltage protectors available, and reduces the harmonic distortion issues typically associated with a solid-state protection solution.

The SEP series is available with VDRM ratings ranging from 6V to 65V and VS ratings ranging from 25 to 88V. This family of products is compatible with both GR-1089-CORE and ITU K.20/21 lightning surge withstand specifications. This series offers a surge rating of 500 A for a 2x10 µS waveshape and 100A for a 10x100 µS waveshape.

These devices provide balanced protection that eliminates longitudinal to metallic conversion, minimizing potential damage to downstream components, and eliminating the need for other downstream protection devices, thus lowering costs.

The SEP Series combines a robust surge rating with a minimal footprint and smaller package size that meet OEM demands for higher component density and greater installation efficiency. This innovative design replaces nine discrete devices with a single QFN package. Its compact 5 x 6 QFN (Quad Flatpak No-Lead) package has dimensions of 5 x 6 x 1.0 mm (0.197 x 0.237 x 0.04 inches).
