The embedded AC/DC power supply market will grow at a rate of 5.1 percent in 2009. Fueled by the emergence of LED solid-state lighting (SSL) as a major application area, the embedded AC/DC power supply market is projected to realize immediate growth. In fact, it is expected to continue growing, increasing from $14.8 billion in 2009 to $20.6 billion in 2014, at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.8 percent, according to a latest study by Darnell Group.
“The rapid emergence of SSL applications into the embedded AC/DC market represents a significant development for the industry, as it presents power supply manufacturers with an opportunity to capture a portion of the anticipated market growth expected this year,” states Richard Ruiz, research analyst with Darnell. “Without the $1.9 billion SSL segment, the traditional 'core' power supply applications included in this report would shrink to only $13.2 billion in 2009.”
Other factors driving the embedded AC/DC market include evolving power architectures, packaging trends and global standards stressing the need for improvements in energy efficiency. Combined with ongoing developments in advanced components and new markets for AC/DC power, the opportunities for power supply manufacturers should be plentiful in the long run. However, Darnell Group does not expect consistent growth over the next five years. Projected growth will be significantly slower over the first several years of the period before returning to normal. The effect of the slowdown on growth will vary by category. Some applications are expected to be seriously impacted; other applications will be only slightly affected, while others are expected to remain unchanged.
