NXP to Integrate Adobe Flash Platform for the Digital Home into its STB Platforms

(Technology News, 22 Apr 2009 )

NXP Semiconductors has announced support for the Adobe Flash Platform for the Digital Home. The optimized implementation of Flash technology for Internet connected televisions, set-top boxes (STB), Blu-ray players and other devices in the digital living room is expected to be supported on NXP’s IP STB platforms, the STB225 and STB222. Adobe Flash Platform for the Digital Home allows consumers to enjoy rich Flash technology based web content, applications and user interfaces on their televisions, and will change how Internet video content is viewed.

NXP is a top three leader in digital video systems, and its extensive portfolio of STB system solutions, coupled with Adobe’s optimized Flash technology, will enable major OEM manufacturers to quickly develop devices that target the digital home. Dynamic user interfaces using Flash technology based widgets will provide unique opportunities to display rich, interactive web based content on televisions, enhancing the viewing experience for consumers.

“The growth in IP-based video content has been outstanding—consumers are eager to access to the large libraries of Internet video content available through their TVs, and not be tied to PCs,” says Mark Samuel, General Manager for cable and IP STB, NXP Semiconductors. “Adobe Flash technology raises the consumer experience to a new level and this ability to seamlessly engage with the Internet will revolutionize the TV viewing experience as we know it today.”

The STB225 and STB222 are complete IP STB reference design platforms targeting the HD and SD markets respectively. Both platforms leverage the excellence of the latest NXP multi format source decoders (PNX8935 and PNX8932), combining advanced video decoding with traditional STB features and integrating key connectivity protocols such as USB2.0, SATA and Ethernet. Enabling rapid product development, the systems come complete with a hardware development platform, software infrastructure and reference examples.
