Fairchild Semiconductor Inc. has launched FSFM300, a highly integrated FPS power switch in an 8-DIP package that can handle up to 30W of output power without a heat sink. The device is suitable for LCD monitors and TVs, set-top boxes and DVD players. Eliminating a heat sink allows LCD monitors to be slimmer and reduces the overall cost of the design.
The FSFM300 Green FPS switch combines a pulse-width-modulator (PWM) and an avalanche-rugged SenseFET MOSFET into a thermally efficient and cost-effective 8-DIP package. By incorporating a SenseFET into the actual die, it reduces component count compared to alternate solutions and saves valuable design time, while reducing overall system costs. This SenseFET also offers exceptionally low RDS(ON).
The FSFM300 uses burst mode protection, bringing standby power consumption to less than 70mW to 140mW depending on the selection of passive components at no load and 265VAC. Since many of these applications need to operate during a wide variety of conditions, this power switch incorporates strong protection features such as over voltage protection, over load protection, advanced over current protection and internal thermal shutdown to shut down the power supply safely in the event of a failure or abnormal condition.
