Quad-band EDGE PA delivers 3G performance with superior efficiency

( 01 Nov 2009 )
By Stephen Las Marias, Editor, EDN Asia

ANADIGICS Inc.’s AWE6159 quad-band polar EDGE power amplifier (PA) module is designed to meet the stringent performance requirements for GMSK and EDGE modes in mobile devices using open-loop polar modulation schemes. The 5x5mm AWE6159 is 49 percent smaller than ANADIGICS' previous generation of polar EDGE PAs and delivers higher saturated output power levels required by 3G devices. The device features an integrated power control for GMSK and EDGE modes to allow easy conversion.

The PA also includes separate amplifier chains to support GSM850/900 bands and for DCS/PCS bands, each optimized to deliver GMSK and 8-PSK modulated RF with superior efficiency and low harmonics. In addition, the AWE6159 adds voltage tracking circuitry to assure Output RF Spectrum (ORFS) meets requirements at low battery voltage conditions.

The device features output power ratings of: 35dBm (GSM850/900) and 33dBm (DCS/PCS) for GSM; and 29dBm (GSM850/900) and 28.5dBm (DCS/PCS) for EDGE.

Efficiency is 55 percent (GSM850/900) and 51 percent (DCS/PCS) for GSM, and 28 percent (GSM850/900 and DCS/PCS) for EDGE.
