Fairchild Semiconductor Wins EDN China’s Leading Product Innovation Award for Fifth Year in a Row

(Product News, 20 Nov 2009 )

Fairchild Semiconductor has been awarded "Leading Product" status in the highly respected EDN China Innovation Awards 2009.

Fairchild’s FAN9612, a boundary-conduction mode (BCM) interleaving power factor correction (PFC) controller, was selected as a Leading Product in the highly competitive Power Device and Module category.

“This is the fifth consecutive year that a Fairchild product has been selected for an EDNC Innovation Award,” commented Benjamin Tan, Regional Vice President, Sales and Marketing, China and SEA for Fairchild on winning the award. “Our ongoing awards success can be credited to our highly talented team of engineers and underscores the depth of its knowledge, expertise and ability to continually innovate. We are proud that EDNC’s judging panel and readers selected the FAN9612 for this prestigious Leading Product award. I’m sure that this latest success will drive our team even further as it strives to design products that meet the very specific needs of China’s electronics engineers.”

The award-winning FAN9612 achieves the industry’s highest AC/DC power conversion efficiency with best converter protection for power systems from 100W to 1kW. With the integrated control for interleaving two BCM boost power stages, the PFC controller provides power supply designers over 96 percent efficiency even at low line and light load. Applications that the FAN9612 targets include power supplies for digital TVs, desktop and entry-level server computers, front-end telecom systems and industrial power systems.

Ability to control two BCM power stages in parallel extends the usable power range of the higher-efficiency and lower-cost BCM PFC converters beyond 300W, and the interleaving provides ripple cancellation and lower EMI, less component stresses and higher reliability. Efficiency improvements come from the accurate valley detection circuit and phase-management at light load capability. Key protection features include programmable closed-loop soft-start to minimize output voltage overshoot, power-limit and current-limit protection per channel, and input voltage feed-forward function to improve voltage regulation.

The EDN China Innovation Award recognize innovation that has led to either technology or product advancements. A panel of industrial experts and EDNC's technical editors selected the finalists in this year's competition. Readers then selected the winners through an online ballot hosted on EDNC's website. Fairchild Semiconductor and other award-winning companies were honored at a presentation ceremony which was held on November 18, in Shenzhen, China.

“Winning this award is very rewarding because Fairchild team’s efforts have been recognized by China’s design engineering community. It’s also satisfying knowing that the FAN9612 (PFC) controller delivers energy-conservation benefits that are integral in helping our customers meet the latest energy-efficiency standards requirements such as China’s energy conservation certificate, which is designed in accordance with relevant Chinese certification standards and technical requirements,” concluded Tan.
