Diversity tuner improves mobile TV reception without external antenna

( 01 Feb 2010 )
By Stephen Las Marias, Editor, EDN Asia

Designed with dual RF inputs, a diversity combiner, and an ISDB-T 1-Segment (1-Seg) demodulator in a single-chip, MaxLinear Inc.’s MxL751SM delivers the sensitivity required to meet antenna challenges when it comes to mobile and portable TV reception in dense urban or high-speed environments.

Most mobile TV designs usually have an external whip antenna to improve reception in dense environments due to multipath reflections, coverage gaps and Doppler effects. However, these external antennas are expensive, break easily, and prevent waterproofing the handset. Meanwhile, internal antennas cause sensitivity within the device, thereby requiring costly, highly complicated design workarounds.

MaxLinear’s MxL751SM demodulator delivers the sensitivity required to meet said challenges, enabling the use of less sensitive and more cost effective dual internal antennas, which reduces system costs and failure rates. The device also features dynamic switching between diversity and single channel modes, as well as all channel filtering, with digital carrier and timing recovery.

The MxL751SM measures only 3.5x3.5mm and comes in a 44-pin WLCSP package. It supports a tuning range of 470MHz to 806MHz, and consumes only 50mW. The MxL751SM builds on MaxLinear’s MxL7002 and MxL703 tuners, and is the company’s first mobile TV SoC to include an integrated demodulator.
