Park Mun-gi, Ph.D., a senior researcher in charge of process development at LG Display Manufacturing Technology Center, has been listed on the Marquis Who’s Who in the World 2011, one of the world’s top three recognized directories with biographies of notable people in various fields.
The expert in transparent electrode processing technology has accomplished great achievement in the development of transparent electrode material as alternative for ITO and fine TFT process. ITO, which has been commonly used as a transparent electrode material for display, is expensive and has a high risk of depletion. Hence, a development of an alternative for the material has been desperate. Transparent electrode is a next-generation technology that is widely used in solar cells and LEDs as well as high-quality flat panel displays using the property of light transmission.

“We have developed a transparent electrode material which can substitute for ITO by adding dopant to ZnO,” Dr. Park said. “Because ZnO is cheap, has no risk of depletion, and has high light transmittance, it can maximize the substitution effect.” The ZnO-based transparent electrode material has been partially applied to LG Display TFT and LCD TN panels.
The researchers were able to improve the pixel-charging capability as well, with development of a processing technology that narrows the transistor channel gap for TFT LCDs. “Today, the switching speed of a TFT is as fast as 240-480Hz. Therefore, it is required to increase the current to shorten the pixel-charging time. For this, it is important to narrow the channel gap. We have finally succeeded in narrowing the transistor channel gap from 5-6µm to 3µm by adjusting the photomask process,” said Dr. Park.
According to Dr. Park, they will continue to focus on technology development through process simplifications such as reduction of TFT mask based on fine processing and photoless processing technology. “We hope that we could make a contribution to technology development in display industry,” he said.
