Microsoft and Toshiba have broadened their global relationship, now looking to HD DVD.
The pair has agreed to investigate development of HD DVD players using Microsoft Windows CE technology, by meshing Microsoft’s expertise in software and PC technologies with Toshiba’s expertise in consumer electronics and computing.
This announcement marks the first time Microsoft has made a partnership commitment to the next-generation optical disk format. It also represents a second step forward for Toshiba in eth next generation DVD race, as the company earlier this month announced it and three partners had successfully development a prototype of a HD DVD-R disc. The companies also plan to strengthen their collaboration on iHD, the DVD Forum’s latest interactivity format.
This deal builds on a relationship that spans two decades, dating back to 1985 when Toshiba launched its first laptop. More recently, Microsoft and Toshiba entered into a patent cross-license with Toshiba covering PC software and digital consumer electronics technology.
The companies have been working closely to promote Windows XP-based tablet PCs and media center PCs on a worldwide basis, offering customers new PC work styles and benefits. Microsoft and Toshiba also expect to develop and deliver mobile PCs with the next version of the Windows operating system, code-named “Longhorn.”
