MOSFET driver enables multiphase notebook PC supplies

( 01 Sep 2004 )

Intersil's ISL6208 is a synchronous-buck converter MOSFET driver IC that provides higher efficiency than other drivers, by using a more efficient "diode emulation" mode during light-load conditions. The 30V driver can sink up to 4A, yet is housed is an 8-lead SOIC or near-chip-scale 333mm QFN package. It includes a bootstrap diode, driven by an internal charge pump, which eliminates the need for an external Schottky diode. When the load is light, the IC automatically goes to discontinuous rather than synchronous conduction, and turns off the low-side MOSFET, thus saving power. Each 2MHz, 0.5˝ driver can support a 3000pF load with less than 8nsec transition time. In orders of 1000 units or less, it is priced at just over a dollar.
