EFTPOS platform accelerates adoption of latest security standards

( 01 Aug 2004 )

Renesas Technology worked with Visa International to develop the first ePOS platform to meet the needs of commercial transaction customers worldwide. This single, scalable design reduces development time with complete application independence for rapid, secure rollout of new applications. It also reduces maintenance requirements and provides a Java-based develop-ment environment for accelerated design, resulting in a large reduction in total ownership cost.

Tests have verified that the hardware and software environment seamlessly incorporate the Visa Smart POS technology. The Renesas ePOS solution combines a wide range of 16/32 bit microcontrollers and embedded security technology to provide enhanced security for electronic transaction systems. The combined security solution enables a fully integrated hardware/software design by utilizing the latest multi-chip packaging technology and providing an optimized top-tier board support package (BSP). Built upon a security environment that incorporates Smart Card (IC) technology, the tamperproof hardware delivers security acceleration and robust anti-slamming control functions.
The Renesas ePOS platform supports open-software standards including GlobalPlatform/STIP, JEFF from J-Consortium and FINREAD. This makes it possible for OEMs and ODMs to quickly customize new applications remotely. Using this single platform, terminal makers can develop a wide range of industry compliant payment products. They can also easily migrate to current and future EMV and Visa Smart POS standards without increasing engineering, maintenance and ownership costs.
