Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced that it will set up a software research center in Dresden, Germany. The operating system research center (OSRC) will focus on ensuring that AMD is optimally supporting the needs of modern operating systems in upcoming generations of microprocessors. The OSRC will be led by Chris Schlaeger, who joined AMD as director of software engineering, reporting to Joe Menard, corporate vice president of software strategy.
The OSRC will also provide prototypes and reference implementations of code to support AMD hardware on Linux, including submission of code to the open source community for inclusion in upcoming Linux and other open source technology releases. The center will also support processor development in areas such as virtualization, symmetric multiprocessing, security, and system and power management.
