Renesas Technology's glass encapsulated diodes ("glass diodes") use lead-free glass in the glass packages encapsulating the diodes.
Glass diodes are employed as switching diodes, Zener diodes, and so forth, and are widely used for switching and circuit surge absorption in general electronic products ranging from automobiles and home appliances to toys. They have excellent air tightness and high reliability, but use low-melting glass containing lead.

Recently, various regulations on removing glass diodes for separate disposal when scrapping devices containing them has been made more stringent. Against this backdrop, Renesas has, through the cooperation of a material manufacturer, achieved low temperature processing of diodes using lead-free glass.
This package technology has been applied to representative Renesas products (currently in volume production) using the main DO-35 (Renesas package code: DHD), DO-34 (Renesas package code: MHD), and surface-mount type SOD-80 (Renesas package code: LLD) glass encapsulated diode packages. DO-35, DO-34 and SOD-80 are JEDEC package codes.
