EMC announces new solutions and services for Oracle applications

(Technology News, 31 Oct 2006 )
By Vinod Kataria

EMC Corporation, in information management and storage, announced the expansion of its specialized solutions and services portfolio for Oracle customers in midsize and enterprise organizations. The new solutions and services leverage EMC and Oracle expertise to help customers reduce total cost of ownership, accelerate time to deployment, improve efficiencies and leverage the full value of their investments in EMC and Oracle infrastructure products.

EMC has developed flexible, customizable, integrated solutions designed for Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Real Application Clusters based upon the EMC Celerra family of IP storage systems. These solutions include both assessment and implementation services to address consolidation, backup and recovery, and protection of information on EMC storage in Oracle environments. To help streamline solution design and implementation for midsize organizations constrained by limited IT resources, EMC has teamed with Oracle to perform rigorous system-level testing and solution validation of EMC storage technology in Oracle environments. These efforts have yielded a rich set of documented best practices, reference architectures, and real-world testing validations which EMC makes available to customers and partners who service midsize customers.

Additionally, EMC is investing to create a dedicated team of Oracle-specialized technology architects to help customers design and deploy these EMC solutions in concert with customers' existing or planned Oracle Database 10g installations.

EMC has developed an Assessment Service for Oracle Database 10g Readiness to help customers effectively plan an implementation or upgrade to the Oracle Database10g and Grid Computing platforms. Using EMC's advanced toolsets and information lifecycle management methodology, EMC provides an assessment of a customer's existing Oracle Database (versions 7x, 8x, or 9x) production environment and one test environment to gather system and performance data in order to make recommendations about data layout, backup and recovery, availability, and general infrastructure for optimizing the move to Oracle Database 10g.

Todd Pavone, vice president of global solutions, EMC, said, “Oracle databases are among the most critical applications being deployed by both enterprise and mid-size organizations around the world. Customers are looking to improve their technology performance, scale efficiently, and ensure that their critical business information is highly available and adequately protected. These new EMC Solutions expand our portfolio for mid-size organizations, and the new EMC Services significantly expand the amount of EMC expertise being made available to reduce risk, time to deployment, and time to value, while greatly improving efficiencies for both our partners and customers."

EMC has also developed a Healthcheck Service to help customers ensure that they are optimizing their underlying database, server and storage infrastructure for maximum system performance. This assessment evaluates the storage infrastructure up through the Oracle application layer to ensure that customers' Oracle solutions are running on the most appropriate infrastructure, gathering system and performance data in order to make recommendations for optimizing customers' Oracle application environments. The Oracle® E-Business Suite Health Check is a fixed-scope service via which EMC's Oracle experts analyze customers' operating environments, identify any problems and make recommendations for improvements around data layout, backup and recovery, availability, and infrastructure.

Dave O'Neil, vice president, North America business unit at Oracle, stated, "With the introduction of these new solution and service offerings, EMC continues to make great strides in helping our customers optimize their Oracle environments for use with EMC's complementary information storage and management technologies. EMC's continued investment in Oracle-specialized offerings – many of which are showcased within the Oracle Enterprise Technology Centers in Atlanta, Georgia, and Reston, Virginia – is a testament to its commitment to driving efficiencies in the design, implementation and optimization of Oracle/EMC computing environments."
