Is India the new hub for VLSI? Says Raj Khare, Chairman ISA, "Few chip programs world-wide do not have an Indian angle to them." Many marquee companies have set up r&d centers in India and many domestic companies have spread their wings offshore.
Khare cites examples of Wipro which has grown to be the largest ASIC design company in the world and says 60-100 chip designs are collectively done each year by Indian companies, including Broadcom. Khare is the former chief of Broadcom India. His question is, when will India produce locally designed products that can compete with the best in the world?
And he hopes to get some answers at the forthcoming 20th International VLSI design conference. VSI (VLSI Society of India), IEEE, ISA (India Semiconductor Association (ISA) and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) are jointly hosting this five day conference in Bangalore, India from 6th January, 2007. This event focuses on activities in VLSI and embedded systems and attracted over 700 delegates last year.
