Smart-Card Interface IC Provides Superior ESD Protection

(Product News, 11 Nov 2008 )

Maxim Integrated Products introduces the DS8024, a low-cost, smart-card interface IC designed for all ISO 7816, EMV(TM), and GSM 11.11 applications. A complete, industry-standard interface for robust smart-card communication, this device performs level translation between a host microcontroller and a 5V or 3V smart card. It provides ±8kV ESD (IEC) protection to prevent damage to the application during card insertion and removal. Card activation and deactivation are handled with an internal sequencer for predictable application of signals and power to the smart card. Short-circuit and overtemperature detectors automatically shut down the power supply when a potentially dangerous situation is detected. It also supplies up to 80mA for smart-card operation. A drop-in upgrade for the TDA8024 and the ST8024, the DS8024 provides higher ESD protection while requiring no application hardware or software changes. It is thus the ideal choice for financial terminals, consumer set-top boxes, and smart-card reader products.

The DS8024 is available in 28-pin SO and TSSOP packages, and is fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius extended temperature range. Prices start at $0.97 (1000-up, FOB USA).
