4-channel IC withstands 100,000 defibrillation pulses

Article By : Maxim

The MAX30034 device can withstand over 100,000 defibrillation pulses and maintain a leakage current under 10pA.

Maxim Integrated has introduced its MAX30034 IC, a four-channel defibrillation pulse and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection device built for ECG monitoring and other medical monitoring equipment.

The device uses semiconductor process that will absorb and redirect high-energy pulses away from sensitive circuitry. It has a three-layer, multi-component approach design, combining a per-channel gas-discharge tube (GDT) and/or transient-voltage suppression (TVS) device and ESD-protection diodes. It replaces conventional and complicated primary-level GDTs, TVSs and secondary-level ESD diodes. The IC can withstand over 100,000 defibrillation pulses without failure and still maintain a leakage current under 10pA (100x less than GDT/TVS-based approaches).

The IC carries a simplified design that is 75% space saving and sized at 3mm x 5mm µMax package with 0°C to 70°C operating temperature range.
