The reference design uses OmniVision's CameraCubeChip and ASIC to bring visualisation to single-use laryngoscopes and avoid the risky direct-line-of-sight technique and hospital cross-contamination.
OmniVision Technologies Inc., in collaboration with COMedia Ltd, has announced the availability of a reference design that enables visualisation in single-use laryngoscopes.
Many medical procedures involve intubation, resulting in over 100 million intubations performed globally each year. The vast majority of these are done using a direct-line-of-sight technique that if performed incorrectly, can cause harm, or in extreme cases, prove fatal to the patient. Separately, incidents of cross-contamination and hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) due to improper sterilisation of reusable devices are becoming more common. Combined with increased sterilisation cost, the adoption of single-use devices is accelerating.
"While laryngoscopes have been around for many years, adding visualisation to them is a fairly recent development. Incorporating digital imaging technology in intubation procedures can greatly improve patient safety and comfort, while also making the procedures simpler, easier and quicker to perform by doctors. The technology also allows the procedure to be recorded for insurance and for litigation defence purposes," said Tehzeeb Gunja, senior product marketing and business development manager at OmniVision.
"Our collaboration with OmniVision brings visualisation to medical devices for procedures that were previously performed with an obstructed line-of-sight," said KC Yeung, CEO at COMedia.
According to OmniVision, the reference design offers good image quality, compact dimensions and low cost. It is based on the OVM9724 CameraCubeChip wafer-level camera module, which measures 3.9mm x 2.9mm x 2.3mm and captures 720p video at 30fps. The video stream is then processed by the OV788, a multimedia companion chip that has an embedded image signal processor (ISP), with multiple input and output formats.
